4 Things You Need in Your Meditation Space

Meditation is a great self-care strategy for anyone to practice, and part of the allure is being able to practice it anywhere. That being said, having one specific space set aside for meditation has the benefit of grounding you during chaotic seasons of life. Explore four essentials to create a quality space for quiet time at home.

Candles

Candles are helpful to create a soothing environment and aroma, and their flames are important in types of meditation. Candle meditation technique can help you go deeper as well as assist you in keeping your focus.

When choosing which type of candle is best for your space, consider what scent you want. It should not be a smell that is too distracting or overwhelming for you. Sandalwood, lavender, and sage are relaxing and commonly used in meditation. If you have many candles in the space, some scentless candles may be a good option as well.

A Cushion

Some people meditate while sitting on a bed, but that positioning is a mistake. The bed is a space where one’s body is used to sleeping, and naturally, people associate a bed with sleep. Falling asleep when meditating on a bed is much easier. The floor is a great alternative because it is grounding; however, the floor can make finding a comfortable spot challenging.

A cushion is the first essential item for any meditation space. It is impossible to focus inward when all you can think about is what a pain in the butt your floor is — pun intended. Using a cushion will not only keep you comfortable, but also ensure you don’t fall asleep.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is important for us to be able to quiet our minds. If your meditation space is filled with too many items or it feels messy, it’s likely you will have a hard time keeping your mind focused. One way to make your meditation space clean is to ensure the air you are breathing is clean. Since meditation requires deep breathing, it’s imperative that your home’s indoor air is clean to avoid discomfort and promote health.

Colors

While you may be tempted to decorate your room to match the color scheme of your house, consider what colors will help you relax best. For example, white can give off a cold and sterile feeling or it can make you feel peaceful and clean. Light greens and blues can bring a calming yet energizing feeling, while oranges and reds tend to be overpowering. Put some thought into how each color makes you feel to choose the best palette for your space.

If changing the color of your walls isn’t an option, you can always get a little creative with tapestries, blankets, cushions, candles, posters, and rugs. These items all tie together to set the ambiance of the room, so consider how you want them to make you feel.

By focusing on the four essentials above, your meditation space will improve dramatically. With a clean, beautiful, comfortable, and practical space, you will be able to ease your mind and focus your attention inwardly. When your environment for meditation is transformed, your experiences will transform you.
