A natural disaster can damage your property and the contents within it which is why it is so important that if you live an area which is prone to natural disasters, that you are doing all that you can to protect yourself. We have seen the damage that a natural disaster can do in places like Florida and California, where hurricanes and wildfires have caused untold damage to properties, hence the reason why it is so important that you are doing all you can to protect your home from the elements. We caught up with the experts from First American Home Warranty to see what you can be doing in order to give yourself protection.
Home Insurance
You should not only have good home insurance, it should also give you the protection plans that you need against a natural disaster. To find the right insurance you should check out some reviews online, compare different pricing structures and focus on things like the quality of customer service, the level of proaction it gives to buyers and the depth of protection which it is going to give you. Not all insurers will protect you against ‘acts of God’ an industry term for a natural disaster, so be sure that you get the level of protection which you need.
Building a Safe Room
You can build a safe room in your home for less than $3,000 and this can be a sanctuary if a natural disaster hits. This can protect you and your family against tornadoes and hurricanes. You can double your safe room to be used for something else as well such as for storage or as a utility room in the home.
Wildfires
You can protect your home against wildfires if you clear a 30 meter perimeter around the home, this exclusion zone should have no debris or foliage which can burn. IF you are not able to do this then clear as much as you possibly cane.
Earthquakes
If you live in an earthquake zone then you must ensure that your home has structural integrity to withstand at least an 8.0 earthquake. Inside the home you should always focus on keeping your possessions well secured against the wall, to avoid the risk of things falling down when an earthquake hits.
Floods
If you live in a flood zone then you are going to have to try to make sure that your electrics and your home appliances are elevated off the ground. Floods will of course still do damage but you can avoid the secondary danger of water getting into the electrics and causing a fire.
Hurricanes and Tropical Storms
If you live in a region such as Florida where these hurricanes and tropical storms are regular occurrences then you need to buy some hurricane shutters to give you the best protection. You should also look to reenforce your garage door, as well as the installation of hurricane straps which will support the structure of your property.
The better that you prepare, the less damage will be done when disaster strikes.
