Numero uno, IT TOTALLY IS JULY. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO IS FREAKING OUT ABOUT THAT?
And number dos, seasonal traffic is real. And I'm here to tell you about it.
So, last fall, my stats were pretty good. I was doing this whole holiday thing, starting with Halloween and going straight through the Christmas holiday. I was (and still am, if I'm being honest) completely exhausted. But it was worth it because my page views were pretty good for a fairly new blog. At least, I thought they were pretty good... I mean, I remember when I had a daily pageview of 13 and I was THRILLED. THIRTEEN PEOPLE I DIDN'T KNOW READ MY BLOG. It was awesome.
Anyhoo, a couple of weeks before Christmas, my stats just dropped. I mean, DROPPED. For reals. It was so sudden I was convinced that Google was having issues with how they reported the statistics. When that seemed implausible, I did a little research and found out that traffic can be very seasonal and often works like this:
For DIY/Crafting blogs, stats usually increase up to the holidays.
There is a drop-off just before the holidays begin, presumably because people are trying to get their own holiday stuff done and just don't have the time for blog reading.
If you expect your stats to pick up after the holidays are over, you'll be disappointed. People tend to decompress a bit after the festivities are over, so it might take months for you to get some decent traffic back. Of course, home organization and weight loss blogs probably do pretty well during January, what with all those New Year's Resolutions and all.
If you have any holiday content on your blog, expect traffic to increase during the summer... that's when people start searching for holiday ideas and will visit your posts.
My holiday posts are on fire here lately... which tells me that people are totally over this summer thing and ready for egg nog and being drunk under the mistletoe.
I have already started projects for the holidays. I AM KNEE-DEEP IN HOT GLUE AND GLITTER AND IT'S AWESOME. I know that all of this early work will make for a happier holiday blogger and it will show in some good traffic. And the hope there is that a few of those visitors will become followers and readers. Happy July to all and to all a good night.
